This Smith and Wesson Number 1 revolver rates near fine for overall condition, with about .80% original finish overall, with practically all of the original blue finish remaining, some spotting on the left side of the barrel. All of the original silver finish remaining with the exception of the right side of the frame where brass is showing through. All S & W markings on the barrel and cylinder are crisp.  A really nice engraved script identification on the backstrap "H. DAVIS CO. D 25TH REG. M.V.M.". On the left side plate of frame "P N" scratched in? The grips have great color, finish and a tight fit to the strap and frame. The serial number is #24887 and the pistol falls into the standard second model. Private Davis initially enlisted as Private in Company D, 25th Massachusetts Infantry. He was wounded in action 06/18/1864 at Petersburg, VA. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal and transferred to Company A 10/05/1864. The Smith and Wesson was a handy little pistol, light and convenient to carry, firing .22 caliber rimfire ammunition that was impervious to rain and foul weather. It might not do much on the battlefield, but it could make an opponent close-up think twice. From my personal collection. A lengthy folder and a factory letter from Smith & Wesson accompany this historic revolver.
