Identified/Inscribed Colt model 1849 pocket revolver, 5-shot, 4" barrel. Serial #77594 matching, 1853 manufacture. Identified to Lieutenant James B. Wood, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Company 'M', "he was severely wounded in a cavalry engagement at White House, VA 06/21/1863, by a canon ball which took off his right leg about midway between the ankle and knee."  Metal overall is a smooth dark grey, almost black. Brass backstrap and triggerguard have a nice untouched age patina with a remnant of silver still remaining. Cylinder scene rates .40%. Bore is good with rifling, will clean better. Mechanics are tight. Two-line New York barrel address is clear, Colt's patent marking of left side of frame. Grips are very good. Backstrap nicely engraved "LIEUT. JAMES B. WOOD / CO. M 17TH PA. CAVALRY.". James B. Wood enlisted as a 1st Sergeant on 09/22/1862 into the 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Company "M" and discharged for disability wounds as Lieutenant on 10/06/63. A lengthy folder accompany this historic revolver. From my personal collection.
