Sharps 4-barrel derringer in .22 caliber rimfire. Serial #51175 matching. The left side frame markings are crisp being marked in a circular pattern "C SHARPS / PATENT 1859", while the right side is marked "C.SHARPS & Co / PHILADA. PA." ("PHILADA. PA." somewhat worn). Production of these began in 1859 just before the Civil War and many soldiers purchased one to carry during the war. The fluted barrels on this example are a dark grey, aged and smooth, traces of original blue exhibited in the barrel flutes. Approximately .65% of the original silver-plating remains, tarnished dark from age, while the brass overall has an uncleaned, aged patina. Very lovely 2-piece scroll-relief gutta-percha grips. The mechanics are fine, complete with rotating firing pin, often missing. This is an untouched, complete example in fine condition overall of a classic desirable American derringer.
