Rare early Civil War desirable 1st model Maynard carbine. Single-shot, .35 caliber, 1st model Maynard carbine. Manufactured in 1858 and 1859, utilizing the Maynard tape priming system for ignition. 37” long with a black walnut shoulder stock. The wood is in very good condition overall, untouched with age handling wear. Early serial #363 stamped under the 20" barrel. includes a 5” long octagonal section at the breech. Bore is clean and bright with light rifling. Standard 3.5" folding tang sight, the front sight is a period alteration. Heavy iron buttplate and iron patchbox that is stamped “MAYNARD PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / JUNE 17, 1856” in three lines. Metal has a light grey/pewter patina with mottled surface. Frame is stamped “MAYNARD ARMS CO. / WASHINGTON” in two lines on the right side. Maynard primer feed system operates perfectly. Bears a museum/collection brass tag. This low-numbered rare 1st model Maynard carbine is a fine example of a cavalry arm popular with both sides during the Civil War. Many of the early 1st model Maynard's went south at the beginning of the war.
