Circa late 1700's - early 1800's Thomas Porter slave button. Constructed of brass, very good condition overall for its' age, the "T P" on the face is still quite clear and all there. Many of these have been recovered off the Atlantic coast, thus the condition. This particular one being brass is still quite very good.  The shank is still present and standing perfect. Thomas Porter was a slave trader and auctioneer operating out of the West Indies in the late 1700's - early 1800's. He would transport slaves from the West Indies primarily through the port town of Charleston, South Carolina. These buttons would be affixed to the garments of the slave as a form of ownership and advertisement.
