Civil War lower leg splint, made of maple and patented by Dr. A M Day of Bennington, VT. Marked "DAY / BENNINGTON VT / 4". As illustrated in Civil War Medical Encyclopedia, volume 1, page 49. Dr. Day supplied medical splints from the mid-1850's through the mid-1860's. This one retains the original red leather straps. Approximately 17 & 1/4" in length, excellent condition overall.
