Confederate scarce Ames model 1841 Naval cutlass that has been modified into a short sword/side knife most likely CS by removing the brass basket guard and trimming down the forward guard, these modifications were very well done, the blade is full length, it retains most of it's original bright finish with only slight loss, and has been sharpened at some time, the ricasso is marked N.P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD, the obverse is marked U.S.N. / 1843 / N.P., the markings are visible covered by some slight rust, the blade fits tight to the hilt with no wiggle, the brass hilt is in great shape and has a dark brass patina. Have never seen a "cut-down" of one of these before.
