C S Palmetto armory model 1840 heavy cavalry saber. This sword is fresh to the market having been in a collection since 1997. Prior to that being offered by The Horse Soldier of Gettysburg, PA during the early part of the 1990's. Ricasso is stamped "COLUMBIA SC". Under where the thin leather washer would be on the blade, there appears to be an inspector's name of 'PECK" stamped on the underside of the guard. Brass guard with leather covered grip and twisted brass wire wrap are in very fine condition overall. The blade shows signs of use with several nicks to the blade edge, exhibiting a light grey patina. Markings are identical to those found in Albaugh's "Photographic Supplement of CS Swords", page #150, figure #27-A. Steel scabbard is very fine with nice dark even patina. These sabers were manufactured by William Glaze, owner of the Palmetto Armory, Columbia, SC during 1852-53. They saw extensive Confederate service during the Civil War and are considered a primary Confederate weapon. This piece is in very good+ original condition overall. This example was inspected in 2011 by Jack Allen Meyer, author of "William Glaze and the Palmetto Armory", and was found to be .100% correct. It was additionally inspected by expert Sean Pritcherd concluding the same assessment. The saber is accompanied by a copy of the volume mentioned above, as well as the catalog in which it was offered by The Horse Soldier.
