Rare Revolutionary War American black leather cartridge box. 4" X 9" concave waist belt cartridge box. Fine condition overall with pliable leather, complete with all 8 tin-pipe cartridge holders, front leather closure strings and both belt loops on the reverse. A simple line design and metal rivets adorn the front out flap. There are also some decorative raised star designs, 3 remaining, 3 missing. All 8 tin-pipe cartridge holders are in very good condition. Leather straps separate the tubes, while additional leather straps reinforce each side seam. In 1778 Congress recommended a waist box with 12 tin-pipes for horsemen in the Continental Army. See "Collector's Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution" by Neumann and Kravic, page #70.
