Identified Confederate wood drum canteen. Wonderful CS wooden drum canteen, .100% hand-made original and complete retains the original vent pick and loop chain. A cork stopper and chain appear to have been added from a US issued canteen sometime along its journey. Fresh from an estate in rural Pender County, NC, a classic example of a cavalry canteen beyond rare.
Neatly carved into one side, aged with the wood is "JOHN B SAGE / CO. A / 5 N.C. CAV.". Records show John B Sage enlisted into the Confederate Army on May 14, 1862 serving with the 5th Battalion, North Carolina Cavalry and later transferred briefly into the 25th NC Infantry before being transferred to the 6th NC Cavalry in 1863. Private Sage was on a semi-secret mission to destroy railroad bridges inside Yankee lines, and on those occasions was mistakenly listed in the Confederate roll records as deserter. Appartenly the officer of the day taking roll did not know of this semi-secret mission behind enemy lines.
Some paperwork accompanies this great Confederate artifact. These CS identified canteens are highly collectible.
