Rare identified and hand-engraved Colt Army revolver inscribed to U.S. Major-General Edward Ferrero of the 51st New York Infantry "Shepard Rifles".  Enlisted 09/13/1861 at New York City as Colonel.  Commissioned into Field & Staff New York 51st Infantry 10/14/1861.  Promoted to Brigadier-General 09/10/1862 & Major-General 12/02/1864.  The 51st New York Infantry was known as the "Shepard Rifles".  General Ferrero has a colorful battle history distinguishing himself at the battles of 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg and Petersburg to name a few.  An extensive folder accompanies this rare Colt revolver.

The Colt Army itself is in super condition overall.  Profusely hand-engraved, serial #51938 matching, 1862 manufacture.  The metal overall is a lovely smooth even rich chocolate brown patina.  Cylinder scene would rate .75%-.80% overall.  Tight Mechanics.  All markings are crisp.  This revolver appears to have been a private purchase which for one would explain the overall period engraving, in addition to the grips never having a cartocuhe, nor any sub-inspectors letters on any of the metal components, it was never government inspected.  Tight metal to metal fit overall.  The 2-piecce walnut grips are in excellent condition overall.  The bore is excellent with crisp rifling.

The inner side of the brass guard is inscribed "COL. E FERRERO / 51TH N.Y. VOL., SHEPARD RIFLES".

A truly great looking Colt Army that saw plenty of major Civil War battle engagements with a wonderful, colorful history belonging to a U.S. Major-General.  A historical piece from my personal collection.
