This Smith and Wesson Number 1 revolver rates very good overall condition, with no original finish remaining.  All S & W markings on the barrel and cylinder are present. A really nice engraved script identification on the backstrap "A. S. NICKLES / MANNSVILLE, N.Y.". The grips have great color, finish and a tight fit to the strap and frame. The serial number is #39654 and the pistol falls into the standard second model. This man is Private Alfred S. Nickles of Mannsville who served as a mounted courier in the 147th regiment of New York Volunteer Infantry.  He was killed in action at the battle of Five Forks, VA (gun shot to the bowel), just a week before Lee surrendered at the end of the war.  Please be aware that finding inscribed weapons from soldiers who were killed in action are extremely rare.

The Smith and Wesson was a handy little pistol, light and convenient to carry, firing .22 caliber rimfire ammunition that was impervious to rain and foul weather. It might not do much on the battlefield, but it could make an opponent close-up think twice. From my personal collection. A lengthy folder accompany this historic revolver.
