Identified Colt model 1849 pocket revolver. Serial #189215 matching, wedge #189134, 1861 manufacture. Metal overall is a mottled dove-tail grey. Brass backstrap and triggerguard have a nice untouched age patina. Cylinder scene rates about .45%. Bore is good with rifling, will clean better. Mechanics are very good. One-line New York barrel address, Colt's patent marking of left side of frame. Grips are very good with some light age scuffing to surface on both sides. Front brass bead sight is worn. Backstrap nicely engraved in script "E. H. NEARING". There is only 1 E. H. Nearing listed in the Civil War database. Edwin H Nearing enlisted as a private on 04/21/1861 into the 1st Connecticut Infantry, Company "H" and mustered out 07-31-1861. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant 01-01-1862 into the 12th Connecticut Infantry, Company "E", was promoted to 1st Lieutenant 05-01-1862 and resigned 06-11-1862. He was re-commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant 11-14-1862 into the 23rd Connecticut Infantry, Company "K" and mustered out 08-31-1863. Private Nearing was present and would have seen action at the First Battle of Bull Run July 21, 1861 with the 1st CT Infantry and as Lieutenant Nearing at the Battle of LaFourche Crossing June 20-21, 1863 with the 23rd CT Infantry. Two lengthy folders accompany this historic revolver.
