Rare Civil War model 1855 Joslyn "Monkey-Tail" carbine. "N4" stamped on breech lever, "R4" stamped on brass barrel band. Lockplate marked "A.H.WATERS & CO. / MILBURY MASS.", Breech lever marked "PATD BY / B.F. JOSLYN. / AUG. 23, 1855". Metal overall is a smooth dove-tail aged grey. The .54 caliber bore is mirror bright with strong grooves, just needs a cleaning. Original untouched brass furniture. Mechanics are tight and correct, the breech lever moves freely. Original rear sight. The stock is very good, period initials carved (well done), on buttstock "JHC" on right side, "JC" on the left. A couple of nicks at the rear underside of the sideplate. The stock is void of a cartouche which is correct, see "U.S. MILITARY ARMS INSPECTOR MARKS by ANTHONY C. DAUM and CHARLES W. PATE". Early in the Civil War the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Ohio Cavalry are known to have been issued these carbines. This is a scarce Civil War carbine difficult to find.
