PLAINS INDIAN DEER-SKIN SMOKING PIPE BAG. THIS UNIQUE SPECIMEN IS A HAND-MADE LEATHER PIPE BAG ARTIFACT FROM THE INDIANS OF THE U.S. SOUTHERN PLAINS. FINE CRAFTED, THIS SMOKING PIPE BAG IS HAND MADE FROM TANNED AND DRIED DEERSKIN AND HAS BEEN CUT, FORMED AND SEWN TO ACCOMMODATE ONE OF THE SMOKING PIPES SO PREVALENT AMONG THE VARIOUS INDIAN TRIBES OF THE PERIOD. ROUGHLY 6" LONG AND SLIGHTLY TAPERED, THE SINGLE PIECE OF BEIGE-COLORED LEATHER HAS BEEN FOLDED OVER AND SEWN WITH THE WIDER END AT THE BOTTOM, AND A SMALLER FLAP OR COVER AT THE TOP PORTION. A THIN STRIP OF LEATHER SERVES AS A HANDLE AT THE TOP OF THE BAG. BAG IS TRIMMED WITH LEATHER TASSELS AT THE BASE AND AT THE COVER. IN ADDITION, THE FACE OF THE BAG HAS BEEN DECORATED WITH THREE ROWS OF PAINSTAKINGLY HAND-SEWN TINY BEADS WITH EACH ROW BEING A DIFFERENT COLOR OF YELLOW, RED AND BLUE. A SMALL, BEADED DIAMOND DEVICE IS ALSO SEWN TO THE FACE. PIECE IS IN WONDERFUL, UNDAMAGED CONDITION. AN UNUSUAL AND FINE EXAMPLE. CIRCA 1890
